We are excited to announce that we have made the data set from the Salford test shoot with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (read more about the test shoot here) publicly available. The data consists of video and audio recordings of orchestra performances in different setups, using a wide range of professional and consumer devices.

The data is hosted by VRT at the ICoSOLE content exchange platform. The data is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 (CC-BY-NC) license. Just register a new account and you will be able to access the data.

We think that this data set is a valuable resource for research. We are currently working on checking and cleaning the metadata recorded by various sensors of the mobile devices.

Test Shoot with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra

At the end of March, BBC organised a test shoot with 10 musicians from the BBC Philharmonic orchestra at their rehearsal studio in Salford.

The purpose of this test shoot was to capture a set of source material for the partners to use whilst developing the systems and algorithms of the ICoSOLE project. The aim was to do this first in an environment over which we had full control, rather than the more uncontrolled scenarios of real public events. A chamber ensemble of musicians from the BBC Philharmonic, fresh from a local tour of the Salford area, performed several pieces from their repertoire, each with several repetitions in order to test different recording conditions.

For capturing audio, we used conventional spot mics on each instrument, plus several different main microphone arrays that capture surround sound with height. These were all extensions of microphone techniques used for surround sound recording, such as the spaced omnidirectional approach (A/B), the optimised carioid triangle (OCT), the Hamasaki square, and the double mid-side (DMS) techniques. For video, BBC provided two HD cameras and a 4K camera recording a wide shot of the studio. Several partners brought user equipment for capturing video and audio, such as GoPros, and various smart phones and tablets.

Opportunity for a Master Thesis

ICoSOLE project partner JOANNEUM RESEARCH is offering the opportunity to perform a master thesis on the topic of “Automatic video quality analysis on mobile devices”.

Description

Quality analysis is crucial when user contributed media are used as sources for professional media production. Automatic algorithms can for example detect instability, over-/underexposure or blur of recorded video. Performing the analysis on the capture device saves bandwidth as it avoids transferring unusable content, and can also make use of other sensors of the device (e.g., to detect instability). The aim of this work is to assess the feasibility of running automatic quality analysis algorithms on state-of-the art mobile devices, taking power consumption issues account.

Required skills

  • Basic knowledge on image processing
  • Experience in application development for mobile devices
